Prague Castle is less a castle than a walled quarter of the city: a cathedral, a royal palace, a basilica, a lane of small houses, gardens, courtyards and several museums, all inside one perimeter above the river.

That scale is the source of the most common visitor mistake — treating it as a single building with a single ticket, when in fact you can walk through most of it for free and pay only for the interiors you actually want.

Go up by tram, come down on foot

This is the single most useful piece of advice about the castle and it has nothing to do with tickets. Tram 22 climbs the hill for the price of an ordinary 46 CZK ticket and drops you at the top gate. You then walk down through Nerudova into Mala Strana and across the bridge, which is both the prettier direction and the one your legs will thank you for.

Most visitors do the reverse, climbing from the bridge in the middle of the day, and arrive hot, tired and at the busiest hour.

What the ticket covers

The standard circuit includes St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George’s Basilica and Golden Lane. You can enter a small section at the back of the cathedral without a ticket, which is enough to see the scale but not the stained glass or the chapels.

What is free and often missed

• The courtyards and the walk through the complex
• The changing of the guard, on the hour, with the fuller ceremony at midday
• The view from the ramparts over the whole city
• The gardens below the castle, in season
• The exterior of St Vitus, which is the part most people photograph anyway

When to go

Early. The complex opens in the morning and the coach groups arrive from mid-morning onward, so the first hour is dramatically quieter than the third. In summer the difference is the difference between a pleasant visit and a slow shuffle.

Late afternoon is the second-best option: the light on the cathedral is better and the groups have gone, though the interiors close before the grounds do.

Golden Lane, and the crowd trap

Golden Lane is the row of tiny coloured houses built into the castle wall, once home to castle staff and later to a number of writers. It is included in the standard ticket, and it is also the single most congested point inside the complex, because the lane is barely wide enough for two people to pass.

Go there first if you have a ticket, before the mid-morning groups arrive. After about eleven you will be queuing to shuffle past doorways rather than looking into them.

The tram is covered by an ordinary transport ticket — there is no special castle fare.
