Things to do

The best views in Prague

A city of spires photographs well from above, and most of the good vantage points cost nothing at all.

Prague sits in a river valley with hills on both sides, which is why it has so many places to look down on itself. Here they are, ranked by what you get relative to what it costs you in money and effort.

The free ones

WhereEffortWhat you see
Petrin hill slopesFunicular on a normal ticket, or a climbThe classic view over the roofs and the river
Prague Castle rampartsFree inside the complexStraight down over Mala Strana to the Old Town
Riegrovy sady, VinohradyFlat walk from the metroCastle at sunset, with half the neighbourhood
Letna parkShort climb from the riverThe bridges lined up along the Vltava
VysehradMetro plus a walkThe quiet end of the river, almost no tourists
Charles Bridge towers approachFree to stand underThe bridge itself, framed

The ticketed ones

WhereRough costVerdict
Petrin Tower~250–300 CZKHighest point; the hill view is nearly as good for free
Old Town Hall tower~300 CZKThe one worth paying for — you look down on the square
Powder Tower~200 CZKFine, but the others beat it
Zizkov TV tower~300 CZKBest view of Prague, because you cannot see the tower from it
The one to pay for

If you climb a single tower, make it the Old Town Hall. It is the only viewpoint that puts you directly above the Old Town Square looking down into it, and there is a lift. Petrin gives you a wider view, but you can get most of that from the hillside without a ticket.

Timing

Sunset is the obvious answer and the crowded one. The underrated alternative is the first hour after sunrise from Letna or the castle ramparts, when the light is doing the same thing and nobody is there. Winter helps — sunset falls in the late afternoon, so you get the golden hour without staying up for it.

For photographs specifically, Letna in the early morning gives you the bridges stacked along the river, and Riegrovy sady in the evening gives you the castle silhouette. Neither costs anything.

Vysehrad, the one nobody goes to

Vysehrad is the second castle, on a rock at the southern end of the city, and it is almost entirely free of visitors. There is a fortress wall to walk along, a neo-gothic basilica, and a cemetery where much of the Czech cultural canon is buried — Dvorak, Smetana, Capek, Mucha.

The view from the ramparts looks back up the river toward the city, which is the reverse of every postcard and better for it. On a three-night trip it is the single best way to spend a Sunday morning: a metro ride, a walk on the walls, and a version of Prague with nobody else in it.

Views from the water

An evening river cruise is the horizontal version of the same idea, and one of the few paid experiences in Prague that consistently justifies the price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best view in Prague?

Petrin hill for the classic postcard, the Old Town Hall tower for looking down into the square, and Letna park for the bridges along the river. The first and last are free.

Is Petrin Tower worth it?

The hill is worth it and costs nothing beyond a transport ticket. The tower adds height but not a great deal of view, so skip it if you are choosing one thing to pay for.

Where can I watch the sunset in Prague?

Riegrovy sady in Vinohrady, Letna park, or the castle ramparts. All free, all busy in summer, all quiet in winter.

Is the funicular to Petrin included in a transport ticket?

Yes. It runs on an ordinary PID ticket, so a 46 CZK 90-minute ticket covers it.

A note on the tower question

Prague sells a lot of tower tickets, and they are all fine. But the city’s real advantage is that it has hills on both sides of the river, so the elevated view is available without paying for it. Unless you specifically want to be higher than the spires, the hillside gives you nine-tenths of the photograph for the price of a tram ticket.
