Beer in Prague
The Czech Republic drinks more beer per head than anywhere else on earth, and a good half-litre costs less than a coffee on the Old Town Square.
Beer here is not a night out, it is an everyday thing — ordered with lunch, drunk slowly, and served in ordinary places by people who have been pouring it for decades. Understanding that is most of what separates a good evening from an expensive one.
The first row and the second row are frequently the same beer from the same brewery. You are paying for the address.
What to order
- Pilsner Urquell — the original pale lager, from Plzen since 1842. Ask for it na cepu (on tap).
- Kozel, Staropramen, Budvar — the other big names, all fine, all cheap.
- Desitka versus dvanactka — 10° and 12° on the menu refer to the wort, roughly to strength. The 10 is the everyday session beer.
- Tmave — dark lager, worth trying once, particularly at U Fleku’s style of place.
Czech bars pour the same beer three ways: hladinka with a normal head, šnyt with a large head and less beer, and mlíko — ‘milk’ — which is almost all foam and tastes sweeter than it looks. Asking for a mlíko in a proper pub is the fastest way to be taken seriously.
Where to drink
Not on the Old Town Square. The pattern is the same as with food: two or three tram stops out and the price halves while the quality goes up. Vinohrady and Zizkov between them have more pubs per street than anywhere else in the city, and Zizkov’s reputation for having the highest pub density in Europe is not entirely a joke.
Look for places with a Pilsner Urquell sign, a tiled interior, no photo menu and no one outside trying to bring you in. Those four signals are more reliable than any list.
Pilsner, and why the Czechs are particular about it

Pilsner-style lager was invented in Bohemia in 1842 and the country has been methodical about serving it ever since. A proper Czech bar pours through a side-mounted tap into a wet glass, and the pour is considered part of the product rather than a formality.
Etiquette, briefly
- You will usually be seated, or you seat yourself and wait. Do not queue at the bar.
- A beer mat on the table is your tab; the server marks it. Do not throw it away.
- Empty glass means another one is coming unless you say otherwise. Put the mat on top of the glass to stop.
- Round up when paying rather than leaving coins on the table.
If you want the history as well as the beer, the brewery tours and tasting walks are one of the better-value paid experiences in the city.
