Kutna Hora was, in the fourteenth century, one of the richest towns in Europe: the silver mined here paid for a good deal of Bohemia. What survives is a compact UNESCO-listed centre with a cathedral built by miners, and on its edge the Sedlec Ossuary — the bone church.

The bone church, and what to expect
The Sedlec Ossuary is a small chapel whose interior is decorated with the remains of an estimated 40 000 people, arranged in the nineteenth century into a chandelier, garlands, a coat of arms and pyramids in the corners. It is genuinely unlike anything else you will see in Europe.
The ossuary is quiet, small and often busy, and photography rules have tightened in recent years. Treat it as you would any cemetery. It is also smaller than photographs suggest — budget thirty minutes rather than an afternoon.
The rest of the town, which people skip
Most day-trippers see the ossuary and leave, which is a mistake. St Barbara’s Cathedral, a twenty-minute walk or a short bus ride from Sedlec, is one of the great gothic buildings of Central Europe, with vaulting and frescoes that reference mining rather than kings. The old town between them is largely intact and almost empty by mid-afternoon.

The train is straightforward and cheap, but note that the main station sits outside the old town, so there is a connection or a walk at the far end. On a two-night trip where time is the scarce resource, an organised trip that handles the logistics is usually the better trade — which is the opposite of our advice for the city itself.
How the town fits together
The three things worth seeing are not in the same place, which catches people out. Sedlec, with the ossuary and its own cathedral, sits near the main railway station on the edge of town. The old town and St Barbara’s are two to three kilometres further on. Between them is a walk of half an hour, a short bus ride, or a stop on the local train.
Plan the order before you arrive rather than working it out on the platform: ossuary first if you come by train, since it is closest, then into town, and leave the cathedral for last because it stays open later than the ossuary does.

Is it worth it on a weekend?
With three nights, yes, and it is the best day out from Prague. With two nights, no — you would be spending half your trip on a town that is not the one you flew to see. Save it for the return visit and use your Sunday on the Jewish Quarter or a slow morning in Vinohrady instead.
