A medieval town wrapped in a river bend, three hours south. Beautiful, UNESCO-listed, and genuinely too far for a two-night weekend.
Cesky Krumlov is the picture that sells southern Bohemia: a castle on a rock, a horseshoe bend of the Vltava, and a town centre that has barely changed shape since the sixteenth century. It deserves its reputation entirely.
It is also about 170 km from Prague, which is the whole problem. A return trip is five hours of travelling before you have looked at anything.

The honest recommendation
On a two-night weekend, do not go. You would spend more than five hours travelling to spend perhaps four hours in a small town, and you would miss most of the city you actually booked a flight to. Kutna Hora is an hour away and gives you a comparable sense of Bohemia outside the capital for a third of the travelling.
On three or four nights, or as an overnight stop on a longer Central Europe trip, Cesky Krumlov is worth every minute. The town empties in the evening once the coaches leave, and that is when it is at its best — which is exactly what a day trip cannot give you.

Between about eleven and four, Cesky Krumlov’s centre carries more visitors per square metre than almost anywhere in the Czech Republic. Before and after those hours it is one of the most atmospheric small towns in Europe. A day trip from Prague puts you there for precisely the wrong window.
What to see when you are there
- The castle and its tower, painted to look like stone it is not, with the best view over the roofs
- The baroque theatre, one of very few surviving with its original machinery
- The river bend, walked slowly, ideally at either end of the day
- The old town squares, which are small enough to cover in an hour
Why it is so crowded for its size
Cesky Krumlov has a permanent population in the low thousands and receives a very large number of visitors, most of them arriving between late morning and mid-afternoon on coaches from Prague, Vienna and Salzburg. The historic centre is a few streets wrapped in a river bend, so there is nowhere for that volume to spread out.
This is not a reason to avoid the town. It is a reason to be there at an hour the coaches are not, which on a day trip from Prague is close to impossible — you arrive with them and leave with them. It is the clearest case in this guide where the honest answer is to do something else, or to give the place a night.
